A strong cricket presence has always existed in Palmwoods, with social games reported to have been played during the 1890s.
The first game of cricket played in Palmwoods is said to have occurred between the railway workers and a team from Cobb & Co (now known as Woombye).
These games went on hold during World War I, though started up again in 1920 with the support of former QLD premier Sir Francis Nicklin, a club supporter and keen cricket player.
The first cricket field in use in Palmwoods was located at the main Sportsground, on Palmwoods-Montville Road (behind the tennis courts) with the pitch at the time situated on an ant bed with coir matting.
Being a relatively small ground, cricket games were moved to Briggs’ paddock (Jubilee Drive) and played there until again disrupted, this time by World War II.
After the war, the present oval and turf wickets were built with the assistance of the Palmwoods Progress Association; one of the first turf pitches on the Sunshine Coast. The first match on turf was played here between Palmwoods and Maroochydore.
Palmwoods Cricket Club boasts 3 senior and 2 junior ovals, and is proud to have turf pitches available for all of the senior home games, both mens and ladies. Recent lighting additions to “The ‘Woods” on Jubilee Drive will see day/night fixtures being played out of Palmwoods for the first time during season 2023/24.
