Palmwoods Cricket Club Juniors Competition

cricket

Does junior cricket really take all day on Saturday?

No! Depending on the format of cricket your player is joining (see below!) cricket is played on either Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. The longest sessions for our U13 players and older start at 7:45am and will finish at the latest by 11:30am. U11 games run from either 8am – 10am, or 10am – 12pm.

What are the key dates for the junior season?

Games typically align with the senior season, with the first game usually in the first or second weekend of October. The season runs through until March, with games every week save for a break over Christmas of three to four weeks. Our website and social media pages will have details each season of registration dates, sign-on dates, and the like.

What formats/types of junior cricket does PCC offer?

We offer three formats of junior cricket, catering from 5 year olds through to 17 year olds.
  • Cricket Blast (5 – 8 year olds): is a new format being introduced in the 23/24 season by Cricket Australia. Designed for younger and newer players who are wanting to get a feel for cricket, this a mix of drills and fun games played to give kids a taste for the game without committing to a full season. Final details are being put together by Cricket Australia but the key focus is on players having fun learning the basics of batting, bowling and fielding – rather than competitive games. Cricket Blast will be played during school terms on Wednesday afternoons at our training sessions; players don’t need to wear any protective gear – we’ll update this page as more information becomes available.
  • Under 10s (formerly Master Blasters): our U10 competition is great fun, lots of energy and parent involvement! U10s is played on a Friday evening from 6pm – 8pm, and is typically hosted at Palmwoods, Maroochydore or Nambour on a rotating basis. It’s played with a soft plastic ball and players will not need protective gear or uniforms. In this format, players bat in pairs until they’ve faced a set number of deliveries, with every “out” adding 4 runs to the opponent’s score. Teams have up to 9 players on the field.
  • U11 – U17: our junior competition in U11s – U17s is where the game starts to get a little more serious. Played with a hard ball on Saturday mornings, full protective gear is required for these games.
    • U11: 142 gram solid plastic ball. 7 players on the field at any one time, all players must bat and bowl (including the wicket keeper – meaning at least two players must play WK). Batters individually face a set number of deliveries – if they get out, they continue to bat and 5 runs are added to the opponent’s score for each wicket.
    • U13: 142 gram solid leather ball. 9 players on the field at any one time, all players must bat and bowl (excluding U13A comp, where the wicket keeper does not have to bowl). Bowlers bowl from opposing ends where possible subject to the field, and when a batter gets out, they’re out. If not out, batters retire after a set number of deliveries or runs.
    • U15+: 156 gram (senior size) solid leather ball. 11 players on the field at any one time. Not all players need to bowl – which means U15 is the first group where a team can really start to focus on specialised batting and bowling roles. When a batter is out, they’re out. If not out, batters retire after a set number of deliveries or runs.

When is training?

Training is on Wednesday afternoons (for all junior grades) kicking off between 3:30 and 4pm. Exact times and details will be confirmed individually with your team and coach. All junior teams train at The Woods, our home ground on Jubilee Drive at Palmwoods.

What is this ‘protective gear’ you keep mentioning? Where should I pick some up?

Protective gear includes a minimum of a helmet, gloves, groin protector (available for boys and girls) and leg pads for all batters. Some players also choose additional gear – for example thigh pads and arm guards. These can be picked up at most sports stores on the Sunshine Coast (eg Rebel) or some of the specialised cricket stores in Brisbane (eg Greg Chappell Cricket Centre, Whack Sports). If your player is just starting out, we highly recommend keeping an eye on sites like Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and the like, as second hand gear can be a great starting point… perhaps get a new groin protector though! Additionally please feel free to chat to the Junior Coordinator or team as we often have some spare gear floating around that we can try to help out with.

How can I get involved with the club?

The most important thing you can do is be there for your player. As with any sport, time spent with them whilst they’re out on the field, encouraging and supporting them, is vital to their development. That includes at training wherever possible!

A huge help for the club is getting involved with your team – everyone working for the club are volunteers who give up their time to ensure a safe and fun environment for all our players. Consider volunteering for Coach or Manager roles – we’ll help you with all the experience you need! Scoring and umpiring roles will be shared amongst teams, so be prepared to get involved on game days – it’s easy and a great way to build shared memories with your players.

How do I register my player?

Registration for Cricket Blast and U10s is direct through Cricket Australia – we’ll update this page as soon as those links are available.

Registration for our other junior programs – U11 onwards – is via the PlayHQ site, and we’ll update the registration links as soon as they costs are finalised.
